We all want to be as healthy as possible. Being healthy affords you a better quality of life! But what areas of your health should you really be focusing on maintaining? Here are a few to take into consideration!

Maintaining Your Strength

We all want to be physically strong. That’s not to say everyone wants a six pack and huge biceps. But we want to be strong enough to do the things we want to do. Now, the best way to maintain your strength is through physical exercise. Hitting the gym, attending classes and joining sports teams can all get you using your muscles and keeping them in good nick. If you’re struggling to stay motivated, you can always use the services of a personal trainer to keep you in line!

Maintaining Flexibility

Many of us underestimate the importance of physical flexibility. But it truly is an important aspect of day to day life. You don’t need to be able to do the splits, but having a level of flexibility will make you more comfortable and will afford you a wider range of movement. There are a number of ways to work on your flexibility, but the most fun and rewarding tend to include yoga classes, pilates classes or other classes specifically focussed on enhancing flexibility.

Maintaining Your Senses

Of course, one area of our health that we tend to forget about maintaining is our senses. These can’t be built on or worked on in a gym. Instead, you have to go out of your way to visit relevant specialists and have a number of tests carried out. This sounds like too much hassle for many of us, but the truth is, these checks are simple to book in and don’t take all too much time to attend. Plus, they’re not exactly regular. You fit them into your schedule here and there and then they’re taken care of!

Eye Tests

You only have to book in for an eye test once every two years. So, it’s important that you do schedule a check in. This isn’t a high commitment task, so there’s no excuses. During your appointment, an optometrist will carry out a number of tests to determine the health of your eye. This will help to identify issues such as glaucoma, cataracts or diabetes. They will then check that you are able to see well. If you are found to be long sighted or short sighted, they will write you a prescription and can recommend glasses or contact lenses.

Hearing Tests

Hearing tests are even less routine than eye tests. Generally speaking, you’d only visit an audiologist if you’ve noticed problems with your hearing or a deterioration in your hearing. But it is extremely important that you attend as and when you need to. During your check up, your audiologist will carry out a number of exams to determine the causes of your problems and will help you to resolve them. This could entail syringing wax from your ears, recommending hearing aids and other hearing devices, or recommending changes in your lifestyle through a hearing protection guide.

Maintaining Your Mental Wellbeing

Remember that your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical wellbeing. We don’t tend to talk about this subject as much, as in the past, there has been a stigma surrounding mental health issues and mental health conditions. But as science and medical research progresses, and as more people are becoming increasingly open about their experiences, we’re growing to acknowledge that mental health concerns are much more prevalent than we initially thought. Maintaining your mental wellbeing is a multi-step process and there are countless resources out there that can help, from websites to charities to support groups to helplines. But if you feel you are struggling with your mental health, a good professional to check in with is your doctor. They’ll be able to diagnose any conditions and recommend further steps, whether that’s medication, therapy or a combination of the two.

Hopefully, focusing on the above areas of your health and wellbeing will help you to lead the happiest, most comfortable and fullest life possible! The steps may feel challenging to follow at first. But all in all, they will become routine and they will pay off. So, get started focusing on them sooner rather than later!
